JOB TITLE: Production Engineer

DEPARTMENT: Production

REPORTING TO:CIO – Overall Work / Assistant R&D Engineer - Casting

JOB DESCRIPTION: Production Engineering defines and works out how the product will be manufactured and/or assembled on the production line including design of packaging, ensuring the right quantity of components/products are delivered and aligned to support the speed of the production line. Review efficiencies and eliminate waste within the manufacturing process to deliver high quality products/components to clearly defined standards.

Responsible for implementation of production processes and procedures, leading productivity improvements with project based activities, including new product introduction and manufacturing cell design to reduce waste, improve quality and safety, and reduce operating costs. Manage KPIs and ensure preventative actions are taken to maximise success. Work on many phases or sub-tasks of projects or entire projects of moderate complexity, with results impacting on project completion. Work under general supervision, reviewed at project milestones and/or on completion by Management.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Production and Task Management
  1. Identify manufacturing needs for new products in development;
  2. Design new systems and processes and provide facilities & methods to ensure the cost effectiv, integration of new products or for the improvement of existing ones into manufacturing operations;
  3. Ensure all product and system requirements are taken into account from the initial product, conception to the finished result;
  4. Assist with shop floor layout and assembly line designs ;
  5. Design fixtures and tooling for assembly tasks ;
  6. Generating production documentation such as assembly instructions ;
  7. Reduce variability in manufacturing by providing standard work methods and work instructions ;
  8. Ensure product and process quality meets specifications required ;
  9. Oversee installation of machinery and equipment ;
  10. Maintain statistical analysis of production and production records ;
  11. Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements and equipment layout ;
  12. Remove waste from the processes ;
  13. Organise plant start-up and shut-down schedules to ensure minimum loss of production time ;
  14. Plan and organise maintenance ;
  15. Respond to breakdowns ;
  16. Report down time and possible trends ;
  17. Support and lead continuous improvement, problem solving and process improvement activities ;
  18. Carry out FMEAs, (Failure Mode Effects Analysis) process documentation and implement improvements ;
  19. Poka Yoke (error proofing) where possible to prevent errors ;
  20. Investigate production and process issues providing technical support and training;
  21. Keep up with current and developing engineering trends;
  22. Undertake special projects as required;
  23. Contribute to continuous improvement activities;
  24. Quality control of work by appropriate reviews;
  25. Write reports and present progress at project meetings and to management;
  26. Achieve goals within budget;
  27. Conduct benchmarking studies to determine best practices/designs and future trends;
  28. Plan projects or subtasks so they may be tracked and presented;
  29. Manage the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs);
  30. Attend various meetings and action/communicate instructions ;
  31. Produce written reports and make presentations;
  32. Undertake continuous training and development;
  33. Perform root cause analysis and resolve problems;
People Management
  1. Lead and/or support technicians and trainee engineers;
  2. Train people within own work group;
  3. Supervise sub-contractors;

  1. Liaise and communicate with other departments, customers, suppliers and other service providers;

Policies & Procedures: Follow all relevant operational procedures and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner. ​​​Audit of compliance to Standard Operatiing Procedures (SOP) and Work Instructions (WI).

Lean Manufacturing / 5S: Able to utilize 5S and lean manufacturing concepts to reduce waste and optimize productivity through maintaining an orderly workplace and using visual cues to achieve more consistent operational results. 5S – sort, set in order, shine, standardize, and sustain – also known as the 5 pillars of a visual workplace. ​​Initiate and maintain 5S programs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

  1. Relevant manufacturing/engineering degree preferred
  2. Understanding of design and production costs to include waste, downtime, scrap and re-work
  3. Professional accreditation with an industry related body would be advantageous
  4. Ability to use CAD
  5. Ability to design processes and layouts.
